Recent versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Windows support a folder-view FTP mode. Basically, this means you can log in to your Globat FTP account and copy, paste, and drag files into your Globat web site just as you would between two folders on your computer.

Although Internet Explorer FTP is useful in a variety of circumstances, it is especially useful when creating web pages with programs such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher that often will give you a folder with HTML files and images, but not any options to publish automatically. In these circumstances, you can simply copy the contents of that folder (HTML files and images) to your httpdocs folder following the method described below.

The default index (main page) filename on Globat is index.html or index.htm. If your main web page is not named in this manner, your web site may not load correctly.

Making Sure Folder FTP is Enabled

Not all computers come pre-configured for Folder FTP view in Internet Explorer. To enable this feature, or to make sure it's enabled, select the "Tools" menu within Internet Explorer, and then choose "Internet Options..."

Then, click the "Advanced" tab at the top of the Internet Options window.

You should see a listing for "Enable folder view for FTP sites" under the Browsing category. If it is already checked, you can use Internet Explorer's folder view FTP. If it is not checked, check it before you continue. Then click, "Apply." Then, click "Okay."

Logging In

Once you have verified that folder view is enabled in Internet Explorer, simply type ftp:// plus your Globat username, plus the @ symbol, plus your Globat domain name, into the Address: input box.

For our Globat Example account, we type this:

ftp://gloexample@globat-example.com/

We are then prompted for a password:

Then, once we have entered the proper password, we will see a folder view of our Globat FTP web space!

Copying Files

Your web files (index.html and all other HTML files, as well as graphics) should be placed in the folder titled httpdocs. Content used with the Shared SSL feature of Globat should be placed in the httpsdocs folder.

To copy files from your computer, select all files you wish to copy, and choose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu in Explorer. Then, open the httpdocs folder in the FTP window (or any other folder to which you want to copy files) and select "Paste."

You can also simply select files and DRAG-and-DROP them into the httpdocs folder in the FTP window.

A Note on Transferring Files

The speed at which files copy will vary depending on the upload speed of your Internet connection. Moving large files on high-speed connections such as cable modems or DSL connections often take much longer to upload (send to your site) than to download (retrieve from your site) due to the way those high-speed technologies are configured. Please be patient while large files are copied onto the server.
