Definitions of words used in Web Hosting (Terminology)

Define - Domain name

The unique name that identifies an Internet site. On the Web, the domain name is the part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that tells a domain name server where to forward a request for a Web page. For example, the domain name of this web site is globat.com.

Define - POP3

Post Office Protocol 3. Mail server protocol commonly used on the internet.

Define - SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a protocol for sending electronic mail messages between computers.

Define - IMAP.

Internet Message Access Protocol. A mail server type.

Define - MySQL Database.

MySQL is an open source relational database management system (RDBMS) that uses Structured Query Language (SQL), the most popular language for adding, accessing, and processing data in a database. It is downloadable from mySQL website (http://www.mysql.com) and tailor it to their needs in accordance with the general public license. MySQL is noted mainly for its speed, reliability, and flexibility.

Define - PHP

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language that lets you create dynamic web pages. PHP-enabled web pages are treated just like regular HTML pages and you can create and edit them the same way you normally create regular HTML pages.

Define - Perl

Short for Practical Extraction and Report Language, Perl is a programming language developed by Larry Wall, especially designed for processing text. Because of its strong text processing abilities, Perl has become one of the most popular languages for writing CGI scripts. Perl is an interpretive language, which makes it easy to build and test simple programs.

Define - JavaScript

JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape to enable Web authors to design interactive sites. Although it shares many of the features and structures of the full Java language, it was developed independently. Javascript can interact with HTML source code, enabling Web authors to spice up their sites with dynamic content. JavaScript is endorsed by a number of software companies and is an open language that anyone can use without purchasing a license. It is supported by recent browsers from Netscape and Microsoft, though Internet Explorer supports only a subset, which Microsoft calls Jscript.

Define - phpMyAdmin

Is a popular, powerful web-based interface for administering MySQL databases. It is open source, written in PHP, and is among the better tools available for working with MySQL databases.

Define - CSS

Short for Cascading Style Sheets, a new feature being added to HTML that gives both Web site developers and users more control over how pages are displayed. With CSS, designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. These style sheets can then be applied to any Web page.

Define – HTML

(Hypertext Markup Language) The document format language used on the World Wide Web. Web browsers read HTML and display the page.

Define – XHTML

Extensible Hypertext Markup Language - A reformulation of HTML 4.0 in XML 1.0. XHTML is a new language for building web pages that has recently been proposed as a W3C Recommendation. This proposed Recommendation caused lots of debate on account of XHTML's usage of XML namespaces.

Define – DHTML

Dynamic HTML. An extension of HTML that enables, among other things, the inclusion of small animations and dynamic menus in Web pages. DHTML code makes use of style sheets and JavaScript.

Define – XML

Short for Extensible Markup Language, a specification developed by the W3C. XML is a pared-down version of SGML, designed especially for Web documents. It allows designers to create their own customized tags, enabling the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations.

Define – XQuery

Is a query language that uses the structure of XML intelligently. It can express queries across all these kinds of data, whether physically stored in XML or viewed as XML via middleware. XQuery is designed to be broadly applicable across many types of XML data sources.

Define - XSL

XSL (Extensible Style Language) is a style sheet language aimed at activities such as rearranging the document that are not supported by CSS, though XSL and CSS share the same underlying concepts. XSL can be used to style XML documents u sing sets of rules and definitions of actions to be applied. XSL is a specification from the W3C.

Define - Subdomain

A subdomain is a subdivision of a larger domain. For example, "mail.yourdomain.com" is a subdomain of "yourdomain.com."

Define - PuTTY

PuTTY is an SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP client. It was originally available only for Windows, but is now also available on various Unix platforms (as well as several other platforms as unofficial ports). It is written and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham, and is open source, licensed under the MIT license.

Define - DNS

(Domain Name System) The Domain Name System is the system that translates Internet domain names into IP numbers. A "DNS Server" is a server that performs this kind of translation.

Define – FTP

An application layer protocol that uses Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and telnet services to transfer bulk-data files between machines or hosts.

Define - Registrar

A company specialized in the registering of domain names with the InterNIC.

Define – CGI

Abbreviation of Common Gateway Interface, a specification for transferring information between a World Wide Web server and a CGI program. A CGI program is any program designed to accept and return data that conforms to the CGI specification. The program could be written in any programming language, including C, Perl, Java, or Visual Basic. CGI programs are the most common way for Web servers to interact dynamically with users. Many HTML pages that contain forms, for example, use a CGI program to process the form's data once it's submitted." (from the ISP Glossary)

Define - SSI

(Server side includes). A type of HTML comment that directs the Web server to dynamically generate data for the Web page upon request.

Define - Cron Tab

The crontab command, found in Unix and Unix-like operating systems, is used to schedule commands to be executed periodically. It reads a series of commands from standard input and collects them into a file known also known as a "crontab" which is later read and whose instructions are carried out.

Define - SSL

Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using a public key to encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to safely transmit confidential information, such as credit card numbers.

Define - Root Server

A computer that maintains root.cache -- the root servers file -- which contains a list of authoritative root servers. The location and name of this file are specified in the boot file, which contains zone names, authorizations, and pointers to zone database files.

Define – URL

Uniform Resource Locator. A way of specifying the location of something on the Internet, eg, "http://www.yourdomain.com/testing html" is the URL for this glossary. The part before the colon specifies the protocol (HTTP). Legal alternatives include encrypted protocols such as HTTPS and legacy protocols such as FTP, news, gopher, etc. The part after the "//" is the server hostname ("yourdomain.com"). The part after the next "/" is the name of the file on the remote server.

Define - A record

Is a collection of related items of data, treated as a single unit for processing. This could be all the information about an individual, or all the information relating to a particular book. A record normally consists of a number of different fields.

Define - CNAME

A CNAME record or canonical name record makes one domain name an alias of another. The aliased domain gets all the subdomains and DNS records of the original.

Define - Affiliate Program

A program that allows websites to sell a product on a commission basis.

Define - Reseller Program

A company/person that sells domain names through registry services provided by an ICANN approved registrar.

Define - Shared Hosting

In shared hosting, multiple sites are hosted on a single server, so each account ends up "sharing" server space with other accounts.

Define - Domain Pointer

A setting which will redirect a domain name to a given Web address (URL); for example, you can set up a domain pointer for www.yourdomain2.com which, when typed into a browser or clicked on from a link, will bring up www.yourdomain1.com instead.

Define - Additional Domain

A completely separate domain name that can be added onto and hosted on an already existing account; for example, www.yourdomain3.com is an additional domain added onto the www.yourdomain1.com account. When www.yourdomain3.com is typed into a browser or clicked on for a link, it will display the Web site you had created for www.yourdomain3.com.
